It’s been a few days since I’ve written about diarrhea, so I thought I’d publish another post. You’re welcome.

Gracie’s birthday party went off without a hitch. It was beautiful and magical — it was everything I hoped it would be, and my girl had a great time. She had had some bloody diarrhea the day before her birthday but on the day of the party she managed to go until late afternoon without pooping at all. She thoroughly enjoyed her surprise visit from Princess Sofia and she loved seeing all her friends. She might have liked the presents a teensy bit, too — she systematically played with all her new gifts and brought me every sealed box she found so I could open the toys for her. She said it was her best birthday ever, and I wholeheartedly concur.

Unfortunately, having a magical birthday party didn’t magically cure her diarrhea. She is still having lots of watery poops every day. All the tests her doctor ran came back negative, so we know Gracie does not have C. diff., or parasites, or any of the other bugs her doctor tested for. It’s great news that everything was negative, but that means we still don’t know what’s going on with her GI tract. It’s not super unusual for Grace to have unexplained diarrhea for a few days, even as long as a week, but it’s been four weeks now and she shows no sign of drying up. We’re trying probiotics, pushing as much fiber as she will eat, and giving her digestive enzymes, but so far nothing’s stopped her intractable tract.

My theory is that her GI tract is moving too quickly. She isn’t digesting her food and she’s having tons of watery poop because everything’s running through her so quickly that she doesn’t have time to process it properly. We’ll likely find out at the end of this month when we visit the gastroenterologist. Last time we saw him he wanted to scope her, which requires sedation and having her drink a ton of gross stuff, but she avoided it at the last minute. I’m guessing she won’t avoid the scope this time. We’re entering new territory here, charting grounds that have never before been explored. Hopefully it will not be in vain.
